This is a set of drawings that helped me to compose a series of ‘sonic portraits’ of 9 distinguished British figures from the worlds of art, science and sport. I interviewed each ‘sitter’ and studied their works, their environment and their favourite or most imposing themes and interests as part of the process of gaining an insight into the character of each of my chosen subjects. National Portraits was performed by the BBC Singers at the National Portrait Galley in June 2006 as part of their 150th birthday celebrations.
